Chapter 8

When it rained, it poured. A call came in from Mia a few minutes after Jane stepped out of the interview room. She was going to let it go to voice but something told her to answer as it was rare that Mia called. She’d become quite adept at running the place. There was very little that she couldn’t do.

“Bad news.”

Jane placed a hand on her head. “Lay it on me.”

“The dishwasher is leaking. Water is everywhere.”

“Wouldn’t you have caught it before it leaked out?”

“I would have if I’d been working, but I was on my lunch break and Harold was talking up a storm with a customer.”

“Who?”

“Lizzy. Which reminds me, what’s the deal with those two? Every time she comes in, he gets all gooey-eyed and acts like a complete baboon. She’s not much better. I thought she was with Anthony.”

“She is.”

“Who’s that, Jane?” Anthony said passing by her.

Jane placed a hand over the phone. “Horatio Caine, he wants his sunglasses back.”

He feigned a laugh and went off to do the paperwork and arrange for Victor’s lawyer. Nothing seemed to faze him. Even though he wasn’t going to be there for at least half an hour, fifteen minutes tops if he rushed, Anthony was determined to continue grilling Victor. Max said that it was his method and though it was aggressive, it had worked surprisingly well in the past. Countless times he’d managed to break down those who wouldn’t say a word simply by repeating the same questions and not letting up.

“Hold on a second, Mia,” Jane said placing her hand back over the phone and calling to Max who was on the other side of the office. “I need to go, bit of an emergency at the café. Sorry.”

“Nothing to be sorry about. Take your time. Not much we can do right now until tomorrow as I’ve tried to get hold of Gabriel and Bonnie but they both appear to be busy with business and can’t pull away until tomorrow morning.”

“Sounds good,” Jane said as she went to leave.

“Oh Jane, you up for a meal tonight?”

“I wish I could, but probably best I skip it tonight. Too much on my plate.”

She left the department with a heavy heart. Her mind was preoccupied with the café, Ethan and her father, and the news that Flynn wasn’t alive. She couldn’t make head or tails of it. If Flynn was dead, who had killed him? And if it wasn’t one of the witches council, who had done it?”

She made a mental note to drop by the hospital later that evening. She was determined to get to the bottom of this if only for her sister’s sake. Agatha had suffered enough with the death of Lizzy and her return; any more trauma was likely to send her over the edge. Being as she didn’t have much luck with guys, it was possible that Ethan’s death could send her into a downward spiral from which she wouldn’t return.
